At approximately 5:50 pm on January 10th, 2016, Greater Sudbury Police received a call from a citizen advising that they had broken through the ice and were stuck in a swamp on one of the snowmobile trails between Garson and Hanmer. The phone was pinged and members of the Traffic Management Unit and Rural Unit investigated on police snowmobiles. While enroute to the scene, the callers son attended and attempted to free the snow machine from the swamp. The caller and her son were located 6 km from the nearest roadway and both were escorted by police snowmobile to EMS where they were taken to the hospital for exposure. The snowmobile trail where the rider became stuck was leading directly to Garson Lake and over a body of water. The rider ventured out on her own despite the inclement weather and freezing temperatures.
