Police advise of fraud scam on Sudbury Kijiji

Greater Sudbury Police would like to advise the public of a series of frauds occurring in the Sudbury area. It would appear the same method of operation is being used to fraudulently acquire money from Sudbury Kijiji users.
Those at risk are persons posting want ads on Kijiji seeking apartments or houses for rent in the Sudbury area. The suspect will contact the ad poster via e-mail or text message, offering a property for rent and providing an address and photos of the interior.
The suspect will say they currently resides in the Greater Toronto Area and will then request the ad poster provide a deposit of $200 to $300 via e-transfer in order to have the apartment keys mailed out so that the apartment can be viewed.
Once the money has been transferred, the suspect then says they have spoken with their lawyer and now requires a second deposit for the balance of first months’ rent before the apartment keys can be sent.
This exact scenario has been reported to Greater Sudbury Police three times in March 2016, with the complainants suffering monetary losses ranging from $200 to $750. The public is reminded to remain cautious when conducting any online transactions.
To prevent being victimized by these criminals the Greater Sudbury Police recommend that you never forward money to anyone who makes a promise to deliver. Any honest worthwhile business transaction can and should be done in person.

I've experienced this but did not fall for it. I might still have the email contact information to help with this investigation. They claimed to be in the u.s and that they were an elderly couple that had just recently moved and didn't sell their house in time. The house was in coppercliff and I took a drive by, it looked as thought there had been car tracks in the snow, somebody had been there. There was a real estate listing sign so I looked up the listing but could not find any information proving the couple I was speaking too owned and we're selling this house. When I tried expressing my feelings of distrust they went a rant about being a Christian family and how they were insulted I'd even suggest they'd lie about such a thing. I was pretty unsure myself what to believe so I never reported it but I sure never sent any money online over to them. They needed a deposit before I could get a key and even see the place. I tried counter offering by asking to make an apointment with the real estate agent for a viewing. They said no! Do not do that! We were going to sell but after coming across your wanted ad on kijiji (which was my bf I and my brother in law looking to rent a house) and thought they'd offer to rent it to me instead of sell it... still didn't feel right to me so I simply stated we weren't interested. But after reading this warning I thought I should mention this incase it helps at all.
