In August and September of 2016, the Greater Sudbury Police Service received two complaints from an elderly male, reporting that on two separate occasions, his credit cards were stolen and used to conduct a number of fraudulent transactions totaling over $1,600.00.
Police determined that a Personal Support Worker (PSW) hired to care for the complainant’s wife in their home, had stolen the credit cards and used them to make the transactions.
Police further learned that the PSW had provided her employer with a forged Police Vulnerable Sector Check, for the purpose of gaining employment.
Following an investigation by the Greater Sudbury Police Service, the female suspect was charged with 23 fraud related offences, including:
- Theft of a Credit Card (X2);
- Possess/Use Stolen Credit Card (x10);
- Fraud Under $5,000.00 (x10); and
- Uttering a Forged Document.
Employers are reminded to ensure they are in receipt of a hard-copy, original Police Record Check. If the validity of the Record Check is in question, employers are urged to contact Police.
