Updated - Canada Revenue Affected by Heatbleed Bug?
The RCMP said today that it had asked the CRA to wait to notify Canadians.
“On Friday April 11th the RCMP’s National Division received a referral from Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) of a malicious breach of taxpayer data due to the Heartbleed bug. Late Friday afternoon, given that further access to data was no longer possible and that we had identified a viable investigative path, the RCMP asked CRA to delay advising the public of the breach until Monday morning,” says the RCMP statement.
“This deferral permitted us to advance our investigation over the weekend, identify possible offender(s) and has helped mitigate further risk.The RCMP appreciates the co-operation of CRA, and appreciates the understanding of Canadians in this matter.”
The CRA shut down its online tax-filing services last Wednesday because of security concerns about the Heartbleed bug, which affects OpenSSL software that provides security and privacy on many websites.
The agency announced Sunday that its online systems had been fully restored, including allowing Canadians to file their tax returns.
The CRA has declined further comment beyond their orginal release announcing the breach.
