Hikers confronted by aggressive bear escape serious injuries #Sudbury

On September 4th at approximately 6pm, 2 hikers with a dog where walking in a wooded trail approximately 20 minutes north of residences off of Birch Hill Rd, which is off Long Lake road, when the dog came into contact with a black bear.

The dog ran back towards the hikers with the bear in chase heading directly towards the hikers.

The bear then turned his attention on the hikers and proceeded to claw and bite both. The hikers took turns at fending off the bear by striking it and eventually the bear stopped his attack and left the area.

They then made their way back to safety and where transported to HSN and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The MNRF was contacted and made aware of the encounter.

The occurrence took place in a wooded area approximately 30 minutes north of Grant Lake and West of McFarlane Lake.
