60-yr-old Onwatin Lake Road resident dies after venturing onto the ice

Shortly after 10:45 AM today a 60 year old resident of Onwatin Lake Road in Hanmer ventured onto the ice of Onwatin Lake. Witnesses observed the male go through the ice due to the unsafe ice conditions and immediately attempted to provide assistance resulting in 911 being activated.

Police say a coordinated response involving Police Fire and EMS attended resulting in the recovery of the individual who was unconscious. Immediate lifesaving efforts were initiated however the individual succumbed to the immersion in the cold water. Policing will be continuing this investigation through the Coroner's Office.

The name of the individual is has not been released out of respect for the family.

Police remind everybody that this tragedy serves as a stark reminder to our community that as winter embraces our community, everyone is urged to prioritize safety.
