Updated: Missing person in Levack

Update - March 21, 2014 - Members of the OPP Dive Team, who have been assisting the Greater Sudbury Police Service, have recovered the body of the missing person from Levack.  The victim was located approx. 30 meters from the location where his personal belongings were found.

The GSPS will not be releasing any further details regarding this tragedy.

 

March 19, 2014 - GSPS has been in contact with the OPP in regards to having their dive team assist.  The terrain in this particular area is challenging and the current is very strong therefore a decision will be made as to how this recovery attempt will be conducted.

The Greater Sudbury Police Service received a call on Tuesday March 18th, at approximately 5:40 p. m., in regards to a missing person in Levack.

Initial investigation revealed that a 39-yr old male left his residence earlier in the day but it was later determined that he did not reach the destination he had provided.  A search of the area was conducted by a family member and a set of single foot prints were noticed going towards open water on the river at the end of High St. in Levack.  At that time, a call was made to 9-1-1.

Officers attended the scene and then requested the assistance of Fire Water Rescue and Emergency Medical Services.  Personal items belonging to the missing person were found next to the open water where the prints were observed though the he was not located.

At this time, the Ontario Provincial Police helicopter is in the area, assisting with the on-going investigation.
