POLICE DISPATCH TWO BEARS INSIDE SUDBURY RESIDENCE

On Monday, August 10, 2015 shortly after 11pm, members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service responded to a call of a bear breaking into a residence on Muriel Crs., Sudbury. Police had previously responded to other complaints of a sow with cubs in the area. Upon arrival police observed extensive damage to the front door of the residence. A large sow and cub were located inside the residence. It should be noted that the homeowners were not inside the residence at the time and no one was injured. The MNR was contacted and advised; however do not attend during night hours. In the interest of public safety, the residence was contained and once the bears exited the residence and in a safe location they were dispatched.

There are some preventable measures that are essential in order to assist with the ongoing bear complaints;

 Only put garbage at the curbside in the morning rather than the night before garbage collection

 Remove bird feeders containing seed, suet, honey

 Clean outdoor barbeque grills including the grease trap underneath

 If you have berry bushes in your yard, ensure that you pick them as they ripen

 Remove pet food from outside

 Avoid putting meat, fish, and fruit in your composter

 Clean out garbage containers and recycle bins with a strong disinfectant

 Consider the use of bear resistant garbage cans
