Greater Sudbury Police Service now offers Text 911

The Greater Sudbury Police Service is now pleased to offer Text with 9-1-1 (T9-1-1) for the deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired (DHHSI) community in the Greater Sudbury Area. T9-1-1 service allows members of the DHHSI community to call 9-1-1 during an emergency, and converse with a 9-1-1 call-taker using text messaging. Specialized software will allow the 9-1-1 call-taker to recognize the call as coming from a registered phone, associated with the DHHSI community, and text with the caller to address the emergency. There will be no need for a caller to be able to speak or hear.
How does T9-1-1 work?

-
Register your cell phone for T9-1-1 with your wireless carrier.

- In an emergency, dial 9-1-1 as if making a voice call. Do not send a text message directly. Communicate with the 9-1-1 operator via text message and provide all relevant information, including your name, location and the emergency assistance required.

-Only call 9-1-1 for emergencies.
