SUDBURY – Conservation Sudbury is maintaining the Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety for all parts of the Greater Sudbury watersheds effective 2:30 p.m., March 24, 2016. This statement will remain in effect until another update is provided. Conservation Sudbury remains in direct contact with the City of Greater Sudbury and all other partners as required.
The current Environment Canada forecast for the Easter weekend and into early next week indicates warmer temperatures during the day and cooler at night with additional precipitation.
Water levels in most lakes and streams remain high but are slowly moving towards seasonal levels. Cooler temperatures have brought some stability to water levels in smaller watersheds. However, levels and flows on a few watercourses will remain high and fast for some time. The developing conditions must be closely monitored by all residents especially those living in known low-lying, hazard areas where overland flooding could become an issue.
Residents in the City of Greater Sudbury who may experience problems due to overland runoff or flooding should call 3-1-1. The service operates 24 hours a day.
Public safety is absolutely the number one priority, especially for children who may be attracted to the edge of creeks or rivers. The cold, fast flowing water must be avoided. Stream banks will be very slippery and unsafe, and must be avoided. Open water areas often found at the edges of icecovered lakes will continue to widen and these must also be avoided. Conservation Sudbury staff continues with the monitoring of water levels; updates will be provided as required.
