Spruce Street - Explosive and Weapon Charges

As a result of a week-long investigation by members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service, in collaboration with the Canada Border Services Agency, police became aware that a resident of Spruce Street in Sudbury had imported a prohibited magazine and ammunition for a 223 calibre weapon from the United States. The package was intercepted by members of the Canadian Border Services. Members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service`s Break, Enter and Robbery Unit prepared a Warrant and, with members of our Tactical Team, determined the safest manner to enter and search the residence.

Bomb squad called in to identify suspicious device

Police anticipated locating the magazine and a weapon capable of firing the ammunition but upon entry into the residence, the following items were also located: several magazines, a homemade explosive device, a prohibited shotgun and a homemade conducted energy weapon.

Members of the Ontario Provincial Police Explosives Disposal Unit attended and safely rendered the explosive device inoperable. This is another example of law enforcement agencies working together to ensure public safety.

This event makes us realize what is possible even in a community such as ours. Public Safety is everyone’s responsibility and it is important that members of the community are vigilant and know that it is their obligation to be aware of what is occurring in the community and in their homes. Explosive devices such as these are capable of causing significant damage and loss of life.

In a separate release, Acting Regional Director General Chris Clarke of Canada Border Services issue the following release:

“We are very proud of the work of CBSA officers in Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario on this case, as well as the instrumental role they have played in this joint investigation with Sudbury Police.

Whenever the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has information indicating that additional measures are necessary to protect our borders, we take appropriate action.

By working closely with our local law enforcement partners, we have made an impact on our ability to detect illegal cross-border activity such as weapons smuggling.

Firearms, weapons and prohibited devices are high-risk commodities and their interdiction is a CBSA enforcement priority.

This initiative is an example of how forging strong relationships among Canadian law enforcement agencies is critical to keeping the border closed to safety and security threats. Firearm and weapon seizures like this serve as a reminder of the important role CBSA officers and local police play in keeping our communities safe.

The CBSA investigation is on-going and additional charges may follow.”
