According to police, the Greater Sudbury Police Service’s Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) began investigating in the summer of 2025 after receiving a complaint from a concerned community member. The report alleged that an illegal cannabis shop operating under the name The Red Eyes had sold products to the youth.
On August 7, 2025, DEU officers—assisted by the Emergency Response Unit and the Intelligence Unit—arrested a male suspect after observing him delivering cannabis products. Police later executed a Cannabis Act search warrant at a residence on Rutherglen Crescent.
The search resulted in the seizure of:
-About 200 pounds of dried cannabis
-Cannabis vape pens, edibles, and hashish
-Approximately $14,000 in cash, suspected to be proceeds of crime
Police say the photo they released represents only about one-quarter of the total seizure.
The accused faces several charges under the Cannabis Act and Criminal Code, including:
-Possession for the purpose of distributing
-Possessing, producing, selling, and distributing cannabis
-Failing to comply with labelling regulations
-Using labelling that appeals to young persons
-Selling cannabis to an individual under 18
-Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
The suspect is scheduled to appear in bail court on August 8, 2025. His name has not been released as the information has not yet been sworn in court.
Police are reminding the public that cannabis sales in Ontario are strictly regulated, and products should only be purchased from licensed retailers to ensure consumer safety.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be laid.

<dc:identifier>0ae0d5aa-f348-4c51-95f1-993325de75c0-2636</dc:identifier>

Northern Ontario Online

Stolen SUV Suspect Arrested After High-Speed Chase Through Greater Sudbury

SUDBURY – July 7, 2025 — A 30-year-old man is facing multiple criminal and traffic charges following a dramatic high-speed chase through the streets of Greater Sudbury on Saturday morning.
At approximately 10:45 a.m. on July 5, the Greater Sudbury Police Service received a 9-1-1 call reporting a red SUV being driven aggressively along the Kingsway. Callers indicated the vehicle had sideswiped another vehicle and fled the scene.
Minutes later, another complaint came in reporting the same vehicle speeding on Falconbridge Road toward Garson. Witnesses said the SUV was travelling at an estimated 170 km/h and was seen driving into oncoming traffic.
Officers quickly located the vehicle in Garson, but the driver refused to stop, ignoring multiple stop signs before turning onto private property in Falconbridge. Police then boxed the vehicle in using cruisers to prevent further risk to the public.
Despite repeated commands to exit the vehicle, the driver refused to cooperate and was forcibly removed and arrested at the scene.
An investigation later revealed the SUV had been reported stolen earlier that day from Sudbury’s downtown core.
Garett Augustin, 30, is now facing a series of charges under the Criminal Code of Canada and the Highway Traffic Act, including:
Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
Failure to stop after an accident
Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
Three counts of failing to comply with a probation order
Failure to comply with a release order
Driving while under suspension
Three counts of failing to stop at a stop sign
Augustin appeared in Weekend and Statutory Holiday (WASH) Court on Sunday, July 6, to answer to the charges.
Police say no injuries were reported in the incident. The investigation is ongoing.

<dc:identifier>0ae0d5aa-f348-4c51-95f1-993325de75c0-2635</dc:identifier>

Northern Ontario Online

Police Raid Downtown Magic Mushroom Dispensary, Seize Drugs and Cash

SUDBURY — July 3, 2025 - A downtown business operating as a psilocybin dispensary was shut down Tuesday after police executed a search warrant, arresting two employees and seizing a large quantity of illegal drugs and cash.
Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS) officers from the Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU), with support from the Emergency Response Unit and the Intelligence Unit, raided a business on Elm Street known as "Shroomyz." The operation followed a months-long investigation into the illegal sale of psilocybin, commonly referred to as “magic mushrooms.”
Police say the business was actively selling psilocybin products when they arrived. Two individuals were arrested inside the store. Officers confiscated more than 300 packages of psilocybin products, including dried mushrooms, capsules, and edibles. The estimated street value of the drugs is $16,500. In addition, officers seized over $18,000 in cash believed to be proceeds from the illegal sales.
The two individuals were charged under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and the Criminal Code of Canada with:
Possession of a Schedule III substance for the purpose of trafficking (psilocybin)
Trafficking in a Schedule III substance (psilocybin)
Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
Both were released from custody and are scheduled to appear in court at a later date. Police have not released their names, as the charges have not yet been formally sworn in court.
The DEU first became aware of the illegal dispensary in November 2024 when it initially opened at a nearby location. Officers at the time took an educational approach, informing the owner and staff of the legal risks associated with selling psilocybin, a Schedule III controlled substance under federal law. The store voluntarily closed, and no charges were laid.
However, in April 2025, police learned that the dispensary had reopened across the street. At that point, officers launched a formal drug investigation, leading to the July 2 search and arrests.
In a statement, GSPS reminded the public that psilocybin remains illegal to sell or possess in Canada without specific Health Canada authorization.
“The Integrated Crime Section remains committed to identifying and disrupting organized crime in Greater Sudbury,” police said, adding that their focus remains on operations that pose a threat to community safety and wellbeing.
Police continue to work with community partners to target major crime, seize illegal drugs and proceeds of crime, and hold offenders accountable.

<dc:identifier>0ae0d5aa-f348-4c51-95f1-993325de75c0-2632</dc:identifier>

Northern Ontario Online

Sudbury WSIB Workers Among 3,000 Province-Wide as Union Blasts Outsourcing Amid Strike

TORONTO, ON – The union representing over 3,000 striking Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) employees is sounding the alarm after internal documents reveal that the agency has begun outsourcing key responsibilities to private contractors — including tasks typically performed by front-line staff now on strike.
The Ontario Compensation Employees Union (OCEU/CUPE 1750) condemned the move as a threat to both job security and the well-being of injured workers across the province.
“This is a blatant attempt to undermine the strike and outsource union jobs behind closed doors,” said OCEU President Harry Goslin. “WSIB would rather contract out work than come to the table with a fair deal. That’s not just disrespectful to our members — it’s dangerous for injured workers who rely on experienced, specialized support.”
An internal WSIB memo obtained by the union outlines a trial initiative that permits contracted health-care providers to directly contact employers and discuss an injured worker’s functional abilities — work that is normally the responsibility of trained WSIB Return-to-Work Specialists.
According to the memo, these contractors will:

Call employers following assessments to share workers’ functional capabilities;

Recommend return-to-work arrangements, including modified or alternate duties;

Confirm whether current job duties match the injured worker’s medical limitations.
“These decisions affect people’s recovery, their employment, and their future,” added Goslin. “Offloading this to private contractors with no accountability is irresponsible."
The union is calling for an immediate halt to the trial program and a return to meaningful negotiations at the bargaining table.
In Greater Sudbury, dozens of local WSIB staff are directly impacted by the ongoing labour dispute, which has entered its third month. Local union members include case managers, return-to-work specialists, and administrative staff who help deliver critical services to injured workers and their employers.
Striking workers are demanding fair wages and protections against excessive workloads, which they say are essential to maintaining service quality and ensuring proper care for injured workers throughout Ontario.
The WSIB has not publicly responded to the union’s concerns about outsourcing at the time of publication.

<dc:identifier>0ae0d5aa-f348-4c51-95f1-993325de75c0-2631</dc:identifier>

Northern Ontario Online

One Dead, One Injured in Lorne Street Domestic Violence Incident; Suspect at Large

SUDBURY — July 2, 2025 — A violent domestic incident in the early hours of Tuesday morning has left one woman dead, another seriously injured, and a suspect on the run.

The declaration, issued under Ontario’s Municipal Act (Regulation 239/02), will remain in effect until further notice.
All municipal roads and sidewalks are now considered to be in a “state of repair,” signaling that weather conditions may impact regular maintenance timelines. While the declaration does not mean road closures or a reduced level of service, officials are urging drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel.
City crews are working continuously to maintain roadways and sidewalks, but residents may notice longer-than-usual wait times for snow and ice clear.
Waste collection may also be affected during the storm. Garbage and recycling pickup could be delayed, and residents are asked for patience while collection crews work through adverse conditions. To assist with collection and ensure public safety, the City reminds residents to place waste in a clearly visible spot near the roadway—not on top of or behind snowbanks, on sidewalks, or in a way that obstructs road or sidewalk maintenance.
Leisure programs and public transit services, including GOVA Transit, may also experience disruptions. Transit users are encouraged to check real-time updates at mybus.greatersudbury.ca.
The City will provide updates through its website, social media, and public service announcements. Once the significant weather event is lifted, regular winter maintenance timelines will resume.

<dc:identifier>0ae0d5aa-f348-4c51-95f1-993325de75c0-2622</dc:identifier>

Northern Ontario Online

Sudbury Police Investigating Homicide After Body Found in Truck on Lansdowne Street

(SUDBURY, ON) — Greater Sudbury Police are investigating a suspected homicide after a man was found dead in a parked truck on Lansdowne Street Sunday afternoon.
Emergency crews were called to a residence shortly before 3:25 p.m. on April 6 after a report of a suspicious vehicle. The vehicle, a black 2004 Dodge Ram 1500, was located inside a garage with an unresponsive man inside.
Firefighters forced entry into the vehicle, and paramedics confirmed the man had died at the scene. Police believe the victim sustained a gunshot wound, although it remains unclear where the fatal injury occurred.
As of Monday morning, the man's identity has not been confirmed. A postmortem examination is scheduled for April 8 through the Coroner’s Office to determine the cause of death and assist in identifying the deceased.
Officers searched the home associated with the address but found no one inside. Investigators are now working to establish a connection between the vehicle and the property.

The incident began around 10:55 a.m. on April 1, 2025, when Greater Sudbury Fire Services responded to a structure fire at a residence on Hanna Avenue. While firefighters worked to extinguish the flames, an individual at the scene became aggressive and later barricaded himself inside the residence before police arrived.
Members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service’s Patrol Operations quickly secured the area, and the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) was dispatched. Upon attempting to negotiate with the individual, officers faced gunfire from inside the residence. In response, nearby residents were ordered to shelter in place, and vehicle and pedestrian traffic was restricted to ensure public safety.
The standoff continued through the night as officers worked to resolve the situation. Around 5:00 a.m. on April 2, ERU officers entered the residence and located the individual. After nearly two hours of negotiations inside the home, the suspect was taken into custody at approximately 6:50 a.m.
The 36-year-old man now faces multiple firearm-related charges as well as a charge of unlawfully being in a dwelling. He is scheduled to appear in Bail Court later today.

The project, called SEEDLING (Science & Engineering Experiments at Depth: LearnING at SNOLAB), will begin development this spring. SEEDLING will encourage students from grades 4 to 8 to ask their own questions and follow the scientific method to reach an answer. The program will encourage students to design experiments to test their own questions aligned with the unique conditions at SNOLAB. Selected projects will be matchedwith SNOLAB mentors to design, build, and test experiments via live broadcast from the underground laboratory.

SEEDLING will be driven by curiosity and is designed to increase the exposure of Canadian students to the process of science regardless of their location, available resources, or science background, says Dr. Jodi Cooley, SNOLAB’s executive director.

“Our goal is to develop STEM programming in Northern Ontario and to better reach equity seeking groups as we inspire the next generation scientists and engineers,” said Cooley.

“SNOLAB will provide leadership in advancing EDI in Canada research facilities, will foster a new generation of scientists prepared to discover and innovate in a global economy, and will provide greater access to STEM skills and opportunities in Northern Ontario,” Cooley said.

Funding for SEEDLING will come from Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s PromoScience program, and was announced by François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry in Ottawa last week. PromoScience will contribute $225,000 over three years to support SEEDLING.

“The SEEDLING program hosted at SNOLAB will have a positive impact on Canada’s applied and fundamental science communities and will play a significant role in uplifting science and engineering in Sudbury and across Northern Ontario,” said Sudbury MP Viviane Lapointe.

“Programs like SEEDLING remind us that Sudbury is fortunate to have a world-class science facility like SNOLAB right in our backyard,” Lapointe said.

<dc:identifier>0ae0d5aa-f348-4c51-95f1-993325de75c0-2619</dc:identifier>

Northern Ontario Online

Man Charged with Public Mischief after Alleged Stolen Vehicle Report

(Sudbury, On) – A local man is facing charges after police say he falsely reported his vehicle stolen in an alleged attempt at insurance fraud.

According to authorities, a Coniston resident was first contacted on March 10, 2025, by a caller posing as her grandson. The caller claimed he had been involved in a car accident and required a large sum of money for bail. Believing the request to be genuine, the victim agreed to provide the funds. Shortly thereafter, an individual arrived at her home to collect the cash.

Three days later, on March 13, the victim received a second call—this time from someone claiming to be her grandson’s lawyer. The caller requested additional funds for legal fees, and once again, the same individual returned to the residence to collect the money.

Following an investigation, police identified and arrested 26-year-old Sagar Sharma on March 15. Sharma has been charged with two counts of Personation with Intent and two counts of Fraud Over $5,000 under the Criminal Code of Canada. He appeared in Weekend and Statutory Holiday (WASH) Court on March 15.

Further investigation led to the arrest of a second suspect, 42-year-old Benjamin Alexander, on March 16. Authorities believe Alexander was responsible for handling the money after it was collected from the victim. He faces multiple charges, including Personation with Intent, Fraud Over $5,000, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000, and Trafficking in Property Obtained by Crime. Alexander remains in police custody and is scheduled to appear in Bail Court on March 17.

Police suspect there may be additional victims connected to this scam and are urging anyone with information to come forward. Those who believe they have been targeted in a similar fraud scheme are encouraged to contact police at 705-675-9171.

Meagan, 15 years old and the time, was last seen 11 years ago following a visit with her father at the hospital and later stopping to see her brother.
At the time of her disappearance, Meagan was 15 years old and was described as being 5’10’ tall,
approximately 140 lbs., with dark hair, hazel eyes, and a small scar on her right upper lip. Meagan also has a Playboy bunny tattoo on her left shoulder.
Earlier this week, Greater Sudbury Police issued a statement re-affirming there commitment to solving Meagan’s case “We remain committed to investigating the circumstances of the disappearance of Meagan Pilon and finding answers for her loved ones and the community.”
Meagan Pilon's disappearance in 2013 has been investigated by several organizations, including the Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS), which leads the case, and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), which has provided additional support. Crime Stoppers has promoted her case to encourage anonymous tips, while the National Centre for Missing Persons and Unidentified Remains (NCMPUR) included her in their national database. The Missing Children Society of Canada and the Canadian Centre for Child Protection (CCCP) have also raised awareness and provided support to her family.
The case has also garnered a lot of attention due to the mysterious nature of her disappearance and the lack of any substantial evidence or clues. Groups such as “Please Bring Me Home” and “Greater Sudbury Missing Persons” and others continue their mission to find answers for the family over a decade later. There have also been a couple of documentaries about Meagan’s disappearance; “The Search for Meagan Pilon” was released as part of the Unsolved series by CTV News Northern Ontario in 2020 and also featured in an episode of “Last Seen Alive” on the Discovery Network. Despite these efforts, Meagan remains missing, and her case is still unsolved.
Back in mid August, “Please Bring Me Home”, a group dedicated to investigating missing persons cases throughout Canada announced that they had received “significant information” regarding Meagan’s case and on August 24th a group of volunteers scoured an area of interest in Sudbury but unfortunately found nothing.
We caught up with Natasha Pickering from “Please Bring Me Home” to talk about Meagan’s case and ask about this “significant information”, however Pickering emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and declined further comment citing the need to protect the integrity of the case.
“While this update brings renewed hope, the family and investigators remain cautious, focused on the uncovering the truth behind Meagan’s disappearance.” Pickering explained.
Pickering continued by issuing a heartfelt plea for anyone with information about Meagan’s disappearance to come forward, stressing that any small detail could be a crucial key to solving the case. She continued by emphasizing the importance that anonymous tipsters provide as much detail as possible because it is NOT possible for the “Please Bring Me Home” team to follow up.
It was evident to me in speaking with Pickering that the case was “near and dear” to her. When asked what made this case special, Pickering explained, “I've come to regard Meagan as one of my own, and her family as dear friends. Their unwavering strength and resilience in the face of unimaginable pain have left an indelible mark on my heart.”
“The anniversary resonates deeply with me as I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside Meagan’s family through their darkest moments. Witnessing firsthand the anguish and heartbreak that has become their daily reality.” she continued, “I have seen countless cherished moments that Meagan would have loved, including visits with her adorable niece, which only intensify the longing for her return. The family's pain has been compounded by the loss of Meagan's grandmother and her father's courageous battle with dementia and cancer. Meagan's father's greatest wish is to know what happened to his beloved daughter before he leaves this world, a wish I'm determined to help fulfill.”
Pickering finished by saying “Let's work together to bring closure to the family of Meagan Pilon and uncover the truth behind Meagan's disappearance.”

In an update on the evening of February 24th, the University issued an update saying that substantial progress had been made from Friday evening through Saturday to bring the authentication system online and offered reassurance that the IT department continues to investigate "the depth and breadth of the cyber incident to assess risk and determine what further actions might be required."
Original - As of February 23rd, Laurentian was communicating via social media and using Google Docs.
The Laurentian University website, currently a static information page, says that Information Services at Laurentian were investigating a technical issues affect multiple systems. An update followed the afternoon of February 19th, 2024 indicating that they were working to restore services but offer no additional information.

By February 20th, it was clear that Laurentian had fallen victim to some form of cyber attack and the majority of their systems including basic internet access, student platforms and most faculty platforms were offline. The update says that payroll services are mostly unaffected.
In an update on February 23rd, Information Services advised that in person learning will proceed next week following "Reading Week" but will be limited due to lack of internet connectivity and emphasized that efforts will focus on re-establishing the authentication system allowing users to login followed by access to the digital learning platform, Google and Zoom.
Students and faculty can expect to be without internet access for most of the week in most buildings. Internet access in student residence has been restored.

The update went on further to ask that educators offer special consideration to online, remote and hybrid students.

A FAQ page has been setup for faculty and students here .
Laurentian has not issued a statement providing any further information surrounding the incident but based on the timeframe we're seeing here, it would suggest that the University likely fell victim to a ransomware attack or some other data-destroying event.

In a breach or Denial of Service situation, one would expect the restoral process to proceed much faster and internal services to come back online significantly quicker.

Ransomware is a type of malicious software that infects computers, encrypts files, and demands payment for decryption. It enters through email or software vulnerabilities, locks files, demands money, and threatens deletion if not paid. Prevention involves staying updated, being cautious with emails/links, and regularly backing up files.
In June of last year, the University of Waterloo narrowly missed a ransomware attack after being tipped of by the RCMP that an email server on-campus was compromised. In this event, luckily, only a very small number of users were affected and the university's IT users needed to reset their credentials.
In December, the University of Sherbrooke in Montreal allegedly fell victim to a ransomware attack and in January a ransomware gang know as Lockbit claimed that it had begun releasing data that it claims to have stolen from the university.

According to reports, a 12-year-old player from an opposing team was threatened and assaulted by a coach. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated the matter, leading to the arrest of Melisa Rancourt, a 50-year-old resident of Espanola.
Rancourt, identified as a coach at the arena, was charged with assault, uttering threats causing death or bodily harm, and causing a disturbance. No injuries were reported from the incident.
In a noteworthy development, it was revealed that Rancourt is also a constable with the Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS) since 2018. Following her arrest, Chief Paul Pedersen announced an internal investigation into the alleged misconduct of Constable Rancourt. In accordance with the Police Services Act of Ontario, Rancourt was suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.
"While these allegations have yet to be proven in a court of law, the actions of one individual do not represent our members or reflect the values of our organization," stated Chief Pedersen. "It is always concerning to hear of an officer involved in such incidents. This is not a reflection of our members who serve this community with pride and professionalism. We have confidence in our judicial system and the accountability processes outlined in the Police Services Act.
" The Greater Sudbury Police Service's Professional Standards Bureau will conduct the internal investigation, while the OPP continues its criminal inquiry into the incident. Both investigations aim to ensure transparency and uphold the integrity of law enforcement agencies.
Rancourt is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on March 4, 2024, where further legal proceedings will take place regarding the incident at the local arena.

<dc:identifier>0ae0d5aa-f348-4c51-95f1-993325de75c0-2608</dc:identifier>

Northern Ontario Online

Vagnini located deceased; foul play not suspected

(GREATER SUDBURY, ON) - In a somber turn of events, authorities were summoned to the vicinity of Reserve Camp Road on Atikiamekshing Anishnawbek First Nation earlier today, February 13, 2024. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) had alerted the Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS) regarding the whereabouts of a black 2021 Ram 1500 truck bearing Ontario license plate BK22178, the last vehicle associated with Michael Vagnini, who went missing on January 27, 2024.

UPDATE - Officials say that a total of three firefighters were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening last night.
They confirmed that the explosion was likely that of a smoke explosion.
A smoke explosion can occur when smoke is mixed with air in the right proportions causing it to ignite, sometimes violently, as what the cause in this incident.
The Red Cross and other agencies were on scene to assist the five residents of the building. Four residents of the building next door have also been temporarily displaced as a precaution.
No residents were injured in the blaze.
Greater Sudbury Police Detectives in the Major Crime Section of the Criminal Investigation Division are working in collaboration with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office to determine the cause of the fire. Detectives are also working in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour due to the injuries sustained by the three volunteer firefighters.
Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to contact police.
We'll continue to provide updates as they become available.
UPDATE - Northern Ontario Online has obtained extended drone footage of the fire and what appears to be either and explosion or massive flashover. Firefighters can be seen applying water to the fire as the building smolders. As one of the firefighters attempts to gain access through the front left door the building appears to explode and collapse with a section of the front of the building falling onto two other firefighters. It's difficult to determine in the video if the building flashed over because the door was opened, or the firefighter was still trying to gain access at the time of the apparent explosion.

Sources at the scene tell us that two firefighters have been taken to hospital with non-life-threatening crushing type injuries as a result of a large section on the front of the building collapsing.
ORIGINAL - Greater Sudbury Fire Services are currently on the scene of a major structure fire on Young Street in Capreol.

Few details are available at this time fire officials have been on scene since 7:30pm and it appears that the building has been destroyed.
We'll update this story as more information becomes available.

This joint effort brought together more than 40 experts in fundamental particle physics and cutting-edge quantum sensors from across Canada, the UK, the USA, and Switzerland to explore the potential of interdisciplinary research in this rapidly evolving field.
SNOLAB, host to some of the world’s most sensitive dark matter and neutrino detectors two kilometres underground at Creighton Mine, was a perfect location for the workshop, said SNOLAB Research Director Dr. Jeter Hall.
Astroparticle physics research, which is the bulk of SNOLAB’s science program, is poised to be an early adopter of quantum technology, Hall said.
“We brought together experts in detectors for fundamental particle physics and experts in building cutting-edge quantum sensors and devices to discuss the potential for multidisciplinary research between the two groups,” Hall said.
This collaboration may both advance quantum technology broadly, and result in fundamental physics breakthroughs, such as discovering the nature of dark matter, Hall said.
“Specifically, one of the goals of the workshop was to brainstorm future projects,” Hall said. “We developed a few nascent ideas. We hope collaborating on these ideas will result in future projects exploring this exciting new research space.”
Professor Adrian Bevan, Head of SPCS, said the discussions were lively and the enthusiasm about the future research potential was palpable. The workshop's success is evident in the enthusiastic reactions from both sides, Bevan said.
“The workshop had a broad range of participants from quantum devices makers, engineers, particle physicists and European Space Agency (ESA) quantum technology experts. This multidisciplinary group of people created a stimulating environment to brainstorm and
develop new collaborative ideas,” Bevan said.
Bevan notes SPCS will be reaching out to other quantum technology researchers within Queen Mary to form a united front for securing future United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI) funding opportunities, and developing new channels to efficiently transfer knowledge between research areas and countries, whether through summer schools to upskill staff and students, or similar workshops.

The project was launched in August 2023 and has provided increased access to programs throughout the Rainbow Routes trail network.
“The Rainbow Routes Association plays a vital role in Sudbury’s connection to nature and health. I was pleased to see that this grant allowed them to expand their programming to include new partnerships in the community. Congratulations to the entire team, continue the excellent work!” said Sudbury MPP Jamie West.
The Inclusive Trail Trekkers initiative was partnered with L’Arche Sudbury, allowing for accessible focused hikes. And RRA’s English Conversations on the Trails was accomplished with a partnership with Greater Sudbury Public Library, which welcomed newcomers, international students and those who do not speak English as their first language to enjoy an easy learning experience while hiking our trails.
In addition to the increased programming support, funding was provided to update RRA’s organization to stay resilient through the increased demand for use of trails in the City of Greater Sudbury since the end of the pandemic. Thanks to the 18-month long grant, people with varying language skills and of all abilities will be able to enjoy more programming lead by Rainbow Routes Volunteers.

This year’s campaign ran from November through December and is expected to provide the food bank with close to 100 tons of food through both food and monetary donations. Over$110,000 in monetary donations were collected, of which nearly half came from the Rainbow District School Board and over $10,000 came from Vale employees. In addition, Wheaton Precious Metals Corp. and Vale have each donated $50,000 in support of the Food Bank.
“The Edgar Burton Christmas Food Drive is a great opportunity for Vale to contribute to the Sudbury Food Bank,” said Gord Gilpin, Director of Vale Base Metals’ Ontario Operations. “We are proud to support this incredible campaign every year to help feed those in need."Edgar Burton, a Vale Divisional Shops employee for 36 years, started the annual food drive 36 years ago in his workplace. The campaign grew to include businesses and schools across Sudbury and is now one of the largest per capita food drives in Canada. Today, Vale donates the time of two full time United Steel Worker (USW) Local 6500 employees, Owen Marcotte and Garrett Lloyd, for approximately two months to organize the initiative.
"United Steelworkers Local 6500 members are proud to be a part of this campaign and follow the example of generosity set by our member, the late Edgar Burton,” said Nick Larochelle, President of United Steelworkers, Local 6500 and Honorary Co-Chair of the Campaign. “It makes the difference in the lives of so many.”
The Sudbury Food Bank and its 44 member agencies complete 17,000 requests for services each month.
Sudbury Food Bank executive director Dan Xilon said: "Sudbury Food Bank members, which include food banks, meal providers and specialty programs, all continue to see an increase in first-time users. Every month, the Sudbury Food Bank member agencies programs are being accessed approximately 17,000 times, demonstrating that the need has never been greater.”
“The huge rise in food-bank use makes this year especially important to collect,” said USW co-chair Owen Marcotte. Co-chair Rachel Meehan added: “As a first-time co-chair, I was blown away by the generosity displayed by our employees, partners and the community as a whole.”
