Man Charged with Public Mischief after Alleged Stolen Vehicle Report

(Sudbury, On) – A local man is facing charges after police say he falsely reported his vehicle stolen in an alleged attempt at insurance fraud.

On March 16, 2025, officers responded to a report of a stolen vehicle from a parking lot on Barrydowne Road. The owner claimed the vehicle had been taken while they were inside a nearby establishment.

During the investigation, officers discovered that the vehicle was equipped with a tracking device. After contacting the service provider, they learned that the vehicle was actually in Southern Ontario, where it had been located for approximately two weeks.

Police believe the owner was aware of the vehicle’s location and had falsely reported it stolen in an effort to commit insurance fraud. Authorities notified the insurance provider of the false claim.

The following day, a 21-year-old man was arrested and charged with Public Mischief under the Criminal Code of Canada for filing a false police report. He was released on a promise to appear in court on April 16, 2025. His name cannot be released at this time as the information has not yet been sworn to through the court process.
