Sudbury students discover the culture of Canada’s Aboriginal

On June 10, some 1,000 Greater Sudbury students gathered at the École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur field to take part in a traditional pow-wow and various related events in celebration of National Aboriginal Day. This activity, offered by the N’Swamakok Native Friendship Centre, united elementary school students from the area. Among those attending were 250 from École St-Étienne (Dowling), École Alliance St-Joseph (Chlemsford), École catholique Félix-Ricard (Sudbury) and École St-Dominique (Sudbury). This learning activity enabled students and teachers to better appreciate and discover the culture of Canada’s Aboriginal people. After viewing the Grand Entry, students will see dancers in regalia, listen to honour songs as well as discover and participate in the various components of a pow-wow. The following workshops will also be held: drumming, dancing, playing Métis spoons, tipi teachings, water teachings, fire teachings, medicine wheel teachings and lacrosse teachings.
