Updated: Fatal head-on collision with tractor trailor on Highway 69S

(SUDBURY, ON) On June 11, 2016 at approximately 5:30 a.m., officers from the Sudbury Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 69, City of Greater Sudbury.  Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the Sudbury Fire Department also attended.

Investigation has revealed that a car travelling southbound on Highway 69 entered the northbound lanes on the divided four lane section just south of the Estaire Road exit.  The car travelled southbound in the northbound lanes for approximately 1 kilometer when it collided head-on with a tractor-trailer.

The driver of the car, Richard GRAVELLE, 55 years of age, from Sudbury, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The male driver of the tractor-trailer, also from Sudbury, was not injured.

During the investigation, the southbound lanes remained open while a detour was set-up for northbound traffic.  At 12:30 p.m., officers re-opened one lane for northbound traffic.  The highway is expected to be down to one lane of travel at that location for a few hours until the clean-up of the debris is completed.  Motorists can expect delays during this time.
