(SUDBURY, ON) Updated - September 11th, 2016 11:00pm: On Sunday September 11th 2016 just after 2 o’clock in the afternoon an unknown male carrying a small duffle bag walked behind the Montrose Mall located at 750 LaSalle Blvd in Sudbury. The male proceeded to set the duffle bag on the ground and ignited something inside the bag, causing a small flash explosion that set the bag on fire. When the flash explosion occurred the unknown male was standing next to the duffle bag and put himself in danger of being injured.
The male then left the area on foot and didn’t appear to be injured.
Greater Sudbury Fire Service and the Greater Sudbury Police Service responded to the incident and secured and processed the scene. The flash explosion caused no damage to any property. Police recovered what appears to be a very simple homemade explosive device.
The responsible male is described as being caucasian, middle aged, wearing a red t-shirt, jeans, with shoulder-length light coloured hair.
The Greater Sudbury Police Service is asking the public’s assistance in identifying the man responsible for this flash explosion. Original: Greater Sudbury Police are investigating a suspicious fire behind the Montrose Mall. Witnesses report seeing a fire followed by a loud "bang".
The blaze was at the rear of the building at the west end of the parking lot about a meter from the sidewalk. At the center of the charred area sits a can comparable to that the size of a paint can and it appears that there are the remains of some type of bag, perhaps a suitcase or a duffle bag.
Police have been hesitate to call the fire an explosion and say was more flames.
