A judge ruled this morning that the assault allegations against a Sudbury police officer made by 20 year old Tanner Currie warranted further judicial scrutiny and subsequently Constable Christopher Labreche has been charged with assault.
Currie released surveillance footage of the incident to the media in December. The video shows Labreche allegedly using excessive force against Currie in which was pushed up against a window and smashing it.
Police in Decemeber release a statement clearing Labreche of the allegation through an internal investigation.
Today Greater Sudbury Police issue another statement as follows:
On the 26th of January 2015 a hearing was held at the Sudbury Court House regarding an assault allegation involving a member of the Greater Sudbury Police Service.
At the hearing the presiding Judicial Officer determined that the allegation of Assault against Constable Christopher Labreche warranted further judicial scrutiny and correspondingly issued an information charging Constable Labreche with assault.
As this matter is before the Courts; the Greater Sudbury Police Service cannot make any further comments on this matter at this time.
As a police organization we remain committed and accountable to our members and our community. We pride ourselves as being open and transparent, and will continue to cooperate with all systems of legislative oversight as the complete facts in issue are gathered for presentation in a judicial hearing. At this stage, we are ethically bound not to comment any further in order not to prejudice any potential proceedings that may take place in the future.
