Letters: ‘A Shout Out’

By: Sherrylee Pennington

Six years ago when I became an Elementary School Library Clerk, I discovered that I had an uphill battle to make three school libraries functional. The books were old and there was next to no money to buy new ones in the budgets. Needless to say that the children were not busting down the library door to borrow books! This made me sad as there are so many kids who don’t have the financial means to get new books on their own.
So I reached out to all the ‘big box’ stores in Sudbury trying to get donations of newer books. I did not get much help. Thankfully some parents heard that I was looking for donations (I always am lol) and came through with some good books to start me off. This is where a great, community minded, business came in. Bay's Used Books donated hundreds of books and has continued to donate to my library’s for the past 5 years! They have even given me store credits that some of their customers have donated. This locally owned business has literally helped thousands of Sudbury children to have access to free books.
When children read it helps them learn, it ignites a passion for reading, it helps them to calm down before bedtime, it stretches their imaginations, and it sets them up for success in their lifetime. It is simply wonderful to see their eyes light up when they see new books coming in!
So next time you are looking to buy a book give Bay’s Used Books a try so that we can support a business who truly cares and supports Sudbury children!
