Updated: Greater Sudbury Police confirm the identity of accused in Melvin Street Homicide

Updated - November 16th, 2015 1:30pm: The name of the accused in this Homicide can now be released, and he is identified as:
Reginald Berard
23-years-old
City of Greater Sudbury
Mr. Berard is currently in custody on the following charges:
- 2nd Degree Murder - Section 235(1) Criminal Code
- Breach of Probation - Section 733.1(1) Criminal Code
Mr. Berard is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday the 19th of November 2015, in relation to these charges.

Updated - November 14th, 2015 4:00pm: The Criminal Investigations Division has continued their investigation into the Murder of Mr Marcel Couillard which occurred on November 3rd, 2015.

This has been a very complex investigation.

On Saturday November 14th shortly after 10 a.m., Greater Sudbury Police officers arrested a 23 year old Sudbury man for Second Degree Murder.

The accused was known to the victim.

He will be held in custody pending a future bail hearing.

At this time the Greater Sudbury Police Service cannot provide any further details as the matter is before the Courts.

Updated - November 10th, 2015 3:50pm: The Greater Sudbury Police Service continue to seek the publics’ assistance for any information pertaining to the Melvin Avenue homicide as well as anyone with camera surveillance captured on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 in the surrounding area to contact the tip line at (705) 675-9171 ext. 6632.
Members of the Criminal Investigations Division are still in the process of investigating the homicide that was reported to police on November 3, 2015 at 8:00 p.m.
The Major Crime Investigators are dedicated to this investigation and all information received is being actively followed up.
The Search Management Team officers conducted a detailed grid search in the area on November 9, 2015 and investigators have been canvassing area residents and businesses surrounding Melvin Avenue.

Updated:  November 4th, 2015 6:00pm - Members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service Criminal Investigations Division are still in the process of investigating the suspicious death that was reported to Police on the 3rd of November 2015 at 8:00 p.m.
The Greater Sudbury Police Service can confirm that this is now a Homicide Investigation.
The Greater Sudbury Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance regarding this investigation.
As part of our commitment to Community Safety and Well-being, members of GSPS are in the Melvin Avenue area conducting a Notification of Community Crime (NOCC) patrol. Our personnel will be there to speak with area residents, as well as provide general safety tips.
We have now added a Tip Line for the general public to access to provide any information.

Forensic examinations as well as door to door canvasses are currently being conducted.

Updated: Wednesday November 4th, 2015 8:20am - Shortly after 8 pm Tuesday November 3rd, Police responded to an incident in an apartment on Melvin Avenue where a 51 year old male was located. He was pronounced deceased a short time later.

Investigation at this time is in a preliminary stage but it appears this death is the result of foul play. Police are continuing their investigation into this.

No one is in custody at this time. Police are asking for the public’s assistance with any information concerning this crime to call police or Crimestoppers.

Tuesday November 3rd, 2015 10:30pm - GSPS Uniform Officers responded to a serious incident in the area of Melvin Avenue at 8:03pm this evening. This matter is being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Division. More information will be made available as the investigation progresses.
Police want to assure the public that this is an isolated incident and there is no concern for public safety.
