OPP R.I.D.E. initiative leads to charges

(SUDBURY, ON)- On March 25, 2016, members of the Sudbury Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) established a R.I.D.E. (Reduce Impaired Drivers Everywhere) initiative on Estaire Road, in the City of Greater Sudbury.
At approximately 4:36 pm, officers had occasion to observe a vehicle conduct a U-turn while approaching the R.I.D.E. check and drive away in the opposite direction.
Officers initiated a vehicle stop and it was determined that the male driver had consumed alcohol.
The driver, Normand BERTRAND, 37 years of age from Val Caron, was arrested and charged with:
1. Driving while ability impaired – motor vehicle, contrary to the Criminal Code
2. Driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood, contrary to the Criminal Code
The accused driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days and the vehicle he was operating was impounded for seven (7) days.
The accused will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury, on April 20, 2016, to answer to his charges.
The OPP is reminding motorists that there is no safe amount of alcohol or drug consumption when driving. Anyone who suspects a driver is driving while impaired is urged to call police by dialing 9-1-1 immediately.
