With up to 35mm of rain forecasted by the end of the week, the Nickel District Conservation Authority has updated their Flood Status to a Flood Watch. Flooding is possible in specific watercourses or municipalities. Municipalities, emergency services and individual landowners in flood-prone areas should prepare.

The public is reminded that they should stay clear of water.

RCMP Asked CRA to Delay Notification of Security Breach

The RCMP said today that it had asked the CRA to wait to notify Canadians.

“On Friday April 11th the RCMP’s National Division received a referral from Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) of a malicious breach of taxpayer data due to the Heartbleed bug. Late Friday afternoon, given that further access to data was no longer possible and that we had identified a viable investigative path, the RCMP asked CRA to delay advising the public of the breach until Monday morning,” says the RCMP statement.

Updated - Drinking Water Advisory Issued for the Spanish River

April 17, 2014 - The Sudbury District Health Unit has lifted the drinking water advisory for the Spanish River

A train derailment this morning on the Huron Central main line just east of Nairn Centre caused a leak of diesel fuel into the adjacent wetland.

At the present time, it is not certain whether any of the fuel reached the Spanish River.

As a precaution the Sudbury & District Health Unit is advising those who take their drinking water from the Spanish River or from wells supplied by the river not use that water until further notice.

Shriners Donate To HSN Pediatric Botox Clinic

A clinic at Health Sciences North/Horizon Santé-Nord (HSN) that uses Botox® injections to help children with mobility challenges received a boost today from Shriners in Sudbury and Toronto.

Members of the Sudbury Shrine Club and the Rameses Shriners Toronto were at HSN’s Children’s Treatment Centre today to present a cheque for $4,800 to the HSN’s Pediatric Botox® Clinic.

To ensure moose populations remain healthy and resilient, Ontario is reducing adult moose tags across the province by about 18 per cent for 2014.

On Wednesday April 16th shortly after 8 pm, officers in the Drug Enforcement Unit observed a party known to them to be wanted on an outstanding Immigration Warrant. The 37 year old man was arrested without incident.

Sacré-Coeur student receives Aboriginal Youth Award

Mélanie-Rose Frappier, a grade 11 student at École secondaire du Sacré-Coeur in Sudbury, was honoured during the Gathering Our Voices 2014 Aboriginal Youth Conference. Held in Vancouver from March 18 to 21, this conference brought together some 2,000 youths (14 to 24 years of age) as well as presenters and guests.
