Fatal Collision at Highway 144 and RR 8 near Onaping

(GREATER SUDBURY, ON) - Greater Sudbury Emergency Services responded to a fatal motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 144 and RR 8 near Lavack around 7:30pm on January 25th, 2024.
Information provided to police was that a SUV was travelling westbound on Hwy 144, when the driver lost control failing to negotiate the turn ramp onto MR8 and collided head on with a GOVA Plus bus travelling southbound on MR8.
A third vehicle travelling behind the bus, also struck the bus after the head on collision occurred.

The driver of the SUV was extricated from the vehicle by Greater Sudbury Fire Services and Greater Sudbury Paramedics began lifesaving measures. Unfortunately, the 61-year-old driver succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver of the GOVA Plus bus was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. There were no passengers on the GOVA plus bus at the time of the collision. The driver of the third vehicle was not injured.
Members of our Traffic Management Unit and Forensic Unit attended the scene and based on the preliminary investigation, officers believe that speed is a contributing factor to this collision.
Anyone with information related to this collision or with dash camera footage from the area prior to the collision is asked to contact police.
