The Greater Sudbury Police Service Traffic Management Unit implemented the 12-Month High Visibility Program in January 2012 to address a variety of traffic related concerns in the Sudbury area. Each month the Traffic Management Unit addresses specific issues through education and enforcement strategies.

During the month of November 2014, Traffic Management Unit officers will concentrate their efforts on offences relating to Distracted Driving. Activities will be conducted throughout the City of Greater Sudbury to raise awareness and increase enforcement of distracted driving laws.

The law makes it illegal for drivers to talk, text, dial or email using hand-held cell phones and other hand-held communications and entertainment devices. The law also prohibits drivers from viewing display screens unrelated to the driving task, such as laptops or DVD players while driving.

The use of a hands-free device is still permitted and drivers may use hand-held devices when safely pulled over and lawfully parked on the shoulder of the road or when dialing 9-1-1. Offending drivers will face a roadside fine of $225 plus a victim surcharge and court fees for a total of $280. Proposed changes to legislation is aimed at increasing the maximum fine upon conviction to $1,000.00 with 3 demerit points and give novice drivers a 30 day suspension.

As a driver, your responsibility is to drive attentively and safely at all times. Any unnecessary activity that distracts you from your task of driving should always be avoided.
