Worried about Enterovirus EV-D68? Here's what you need to know

We recognize that there is some concern among some our readers regarding the respiratory illness known as Enterovirus (EV-D68).  At this time of the year with many students returning to school there is always an increase in respiratory illnesses, especially in children. The Sudbury District Health Unit has however NOT reported any confirmed case of Enterovirus (EV-D68) in the Sudbury District.

As of late last week there have only been a handful of confirmed cases in Canada; 18 in Alberta, 3 in BC, and 4 cases in Ontario that CHEO confirmed did not result in intensive car treatment and from which all patients have made a complete recovery.

SDHU - Blue-Green Algal Bloom Reported in Dry Pine Bay in the French River

The Ministry of the Environment has advised the Sudbury & District Health Unit that results from samples taken August 26, 2014, from the French River in the Dry Pine Bay area are positive for blue-green algae (cyanobacteria). The samples contained a species of cyanobacteria that can produce toxins.

Brain Injury Group and HSN Promote Helmet Safety

“Hey bonehead, wear a helmet!” That was the message delivered today at the Minnow Lake Outdoor Skate Park by the Brain Injury Association Sudbury and District (BIASD) and the Emergency Department at Health Sciences North/Horizon Santé-Nord (HSN).

Both organizations teamed up to promote BIASD’s “Helmet Awareness Campaign.”
