Sudbury Declares Significant Weather Event Amid Hazardous Conditions

(Sudbury ON) April 7, 2025 – The City of Greater Sudbury has declared a Significant Weather Event (SWE), effective 6 p.m. Monday evening, due to current or expected hazardous storm conditions. The declaration, issued under Ontario’s Municipal Act (Regulation 239/02), will remain in effect until further notice.

All municipal roads and sidewalks are now considered to be in a “state of repair,” signaling that weather conditions may impact regular maintenance timelines. While the declaration does not mean road closures or a reduced level of service, officials are urging drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel.

City crews are working continuously to maintain roadways and sidewalks, but residents may notice longer-than-usual wait times for snow and ice clear.

Waste collection may also be affected during the storm. Garbage and recycling pickup could be delayed, and residents are asked for patience while collection crews work through adverse conditions. To assist with collection and ensure public safety, the City reminds residents to place waste in a clearly visible spot near the roadway—not on top of or behind snowbanks, on sidewalks, or in a way that obstructs road or sidewalk maintenance.

Leisure programs and public transit services, including GOVA Transit, may also experience disruptions. Transit users are encouraged to check real-time updates at mybus.greatersudbury.ca.

The City will provide updates through its website, social media, and public service announcements. Once the significant weather event is lifted, regular winter maintenance timelines will resume.
