Suspect Arrested After Armed Incident in Mississauga First Nation

(Mississauga First Nation, ON - March 18, 2025) – A 28-year-old individual from Iron Bridge has been taken into custody following a tense police pursuit and firearm-related incident that unfolded on March 16, 2025, in Mississauga First Nation.

According to the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), officers responded to a residence on Old Highway 17 at approximately 12:45 p.m. The operation involved the OPP's Emergency Response Team (ERT), North East Region Community Street Crime Unit, and North East Canine Unit.

Investigators determined that nearly two weeks prior, the suspect had pointed a loaded handgun at their ex-partner at a residence in Blind River. The individual was already subject to a Release Order that prohibited contact with the victim, possession of firearms, and required them to remain at their residence in Iron Bridge.

Upon police arrival at the Old Highway 17 home, the suspect attempted to flee through the rear of the property, triggering a pursuit. With assistance from the Canine Unit, officers tracked the individual to another residence on Shingwauk Street, where they were successfully apprehended. A BB/pellet handgun was seized at the scene.

The accused faces multiple charges, including:

  • Careless use of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device, or ammunition

  • Pointing a firearm

  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm

  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose

  • Possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a Prohibition Order

  • Possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition

  • Failure to comply with a Release Order (seven counts)

The individual appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Blind River on March 17, 2025, and was remanded into custody.

To protect the identity of the victim, the name of the accused has not been released. The investigation remains ongoing.
