On the 20th of August 2015 at 12:31 in the afternoon the Greater Sudbury Police Service received a complaint from City of Greater Sudbury staff regarding a mother bear and 3 cubs at Camp Sudaca.
The bears had located a human food source and were eating this food when city staff contacted police.
At the time that this was occurring there were 90 children participating in activities at Camp Sudaca. Although these children were in a place of safety while the bears were in the area, there was still a concern for their well-being.
Police and Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) attended to deal with these bears.
The MNRF Bear Technician requested that police dispatch the mother bear as they believed this to be the same bear that was reported to be aggressive around Laurentian University earlier this week.
The bear was dispatched by police due to a concern for Public Safety for the people who attend this area.
MNRF staff were able to catch 2 of the cubs and have transferred them to a wildlife refuge. MNRF staff will have an overnight trap set and returning in the morning to search for the remaining bear cub which does not pose a threat to the public.
There are some preventable measures that are essential in order to assist with the ongoing bear complaints;
Only put garbage at the curbside in the morning rather than the night before garbage collection
Remove bird feeders containing seed, suet, honey
Clean outdoor barbeque grills including the grease trap underneath
If you have berry bushes in your yard, ensure that you pick them as they ripen
Remove pet food from outside
Avoid putting meat, fish, and fruit in your composter
Clean out garbage containers and recycle bins with a strong disinfectant
Consider the use of bear resistant garbage cans
Do not approach, feed or provoke bears
