Updated: Man arrested after shots fired in downtown core

Updated September 17th, 2015 10:25am - On the 16th of September 2015 at 3:01 P.M. the Greater Sudbury Police Service received numerous calls from the public regarding a male person dressed in camouflage clothing, carrying a firearm, walking west on Elgin Street. Further information was provided that several shots could be heard in the area.

Uniform and plain clothes officers immediately attended the Sudbury Arena parking lot where they observed the suspect. At this point, officers confirmed that this person was in fact armed with a shotgun.

Using the element of surprise one of our officers was able to gain control of the shotgun; however, at this point the suspect transitioned to a second firearm.

The suspect pointed this second firearm at the responding police officers. Officers were ultimately able to gain control of the suspect by taking him to the ground and were able to remove the second firearm from his possession.

Upon searching the male it was discovered that he was in possession of surplus ammunition for both firearms.

Kudos to the Officers handling this volatile situation. No shots fired. And this young man can now receive the help he seems to desperately need. It's not an easy job that's for sure.
