The Greater Sudbury Police Service would like to remind the public that the bodies of water in our area are not currently safe to be on. Due to a recent snowfall, local waterways may appear to be frozen; however, there is not enough ice to support any weight at this time.
On 29 December 2015, the Greater Sudbury Police Service responded to a snow machine breaking through the ice on Whitewater Lake in Azilda. The operator was not injured and did escape the frigid water unharmed. He was charged under the Motorized Snow Vehicles Act for careless driving.
The Greater Sudbury Police Service would like to remind the public that the recommendations from the Red Cross in relation to safe ice thickness are as follows

 

- 15 cm for walking or skating alone

 

- 20 cm for skating parties or games

 

- 25 cm for snowmobiles

 

Although the fresh layer of snow appears inviting for winter sport enthusiasts, let’s ensure everyone enjoys the winter season in a safe and responsible way.
